Project Title: Advanced Oxidation Processes for Industry and the Chemical Sector

Project Duration: 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2029

Brief description of the project

The ThWIC project TOPIC aims to enable sustainable and resource-efficient wastewater treatment.

The German National Water Strategy and the revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive are increasing the requirements for wastewater treatment, particularly regarding the removal of micropollutants. Many existing treatment technologies are reaching their limits due to high energy and chemical consumption or the formation of undesirable by-products.

This is where TOPIC comes in. The project focuses on the development of innovative, sustainable and resource-efficient technologies for the removal of micropollutants from wastewater. The solutions are designed to be modular and adaptable to a wide range of applications in industry and the water sector.

To achieve this, several Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are being developed, tested and compared. These technologies generate highly reactive oxygen species capable of breaking down persistent and difficult-to-remove pollutants in water. The approaches under investigation include an AOP cavitation reactor, photocatalysis on ceramic foams, and cavitation-assisted cold plasma technology.

By developing next-generation treatment technologies, TOPIC contributes to more efficient and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment and supports the transition towards sustainable water management.
