PiMoAb

The ThWIC project PiMoAb investigates the monitoring and removal of pharmaceutical residues from hospital wastewater.

The project aims to establish a pilot-scale facility for wastewater monitoring and treatment at a site of Jena University Hospital. To achieve this, an integrated, modular and container-based system will be developed and tested under real operating conditions.

The pilot system combines various treatment technologies, including coagulation and flocculation, filtration and membrane-based processes, as well as Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). These technologies are designed to remove pharmaceutical residues and other pollutants from hospital wastewater efficiently and sustainably.

In addition to pharmaceutical compounds, a range of chemical, physical and microbiological parameters will be monitored, partly on a continuous basis using advanced sensor technologies. The collected data will be used to evaluate treatment performance, pollutant removal efficiency and energy consumption. Based on these findings, the project will assess and characterise the treated wastewater with regard to its potential for targeted water reuse at the hospital site.

By combining innovative treatment technologies with real-time monitoring, PiMoAb contributes to the development of sustainable solutions for hospital wastewater management and supports the safe reuse of water resources.
